Dream Theater
Paramount Theatre, Seattle, WA
05.11.16
The ornate setting of Seattle’s Paramount Theatre makes it many people’s favorite, and the setting is perfect for all types of events, adding to the ambiance, and enjoyment of any concert. For the last night of Dream Theater’s current North American tour, the venue was ideal for them to perform their thirteenth studio album The Astonishing in its entirety.
A one-time tour for the band, the entire tour cycle for this album is to play this concept album as one cohesive evening. So the die-hard DT fans that came out knew what they were in for. If you were expecting to hear the classics this wasn’t going to be your night.
The stage was set up with five large video monitors, configured in varied heights to show off extensive graphics illustrating the story line. Various DT logo tapestries hung about, adorning the stage and lighting.
From the opening song, everyone was on his or her feet to witness the musical story unfolding. While the songs from the album take a bit to digest in following along the concept of a “dystopian future with no real music” it was an amazing two-part show as Dream Theater brought their offering to life.
This was indeed an “Astonishing” evening of music with our favorite progressive metal giants.
