Jessie Reyez w/ Savannah Re

Jessie Reyez has one of those shows you walk away from happy that you saw her while she’s still playing 500-person venues, because that won’t last for long.

Her Being Human in Public tour opened with Savannah Re, another stunning performer that set a pretty high bar for the night. Though she’s only got three tracks on Spotify, they don’t have that fresh, under-produced sound that most artists start out with, she sounds professional and experienced right off the bat. And she’s got the confidence to match. A sassy and bad-ass performance, Savannah was the perfect choice as an opener.

Jessie opened her set with “Dear Yessie,” a hard-hitting track which she performed with her baseball cap low and head held high.

Previously, I’d only been introduced to her slower, more singer-songwriter tracks like “Apple Juice” and “Figures,” so seeing her take on a sassier pop-star vibe was a bit of a shock, but the surprise wears off when you see how well she does it. “Body Count,” her track with Kehlani is a perfect collab from two powerhouse women, and “F*** Being Friends” shows that off even more.

Once she took off her hat and sweatshirt, things really turned up. She talked about her disgustingly sexist experiences in the music industry with “Gatekeeper” and the crowd enthusiastically screamed along with the lyrics, middle fingers high in the air.

“Apple Juice” and “Figures” didn’t fail either. Even in her softer moments, Jessie holds the attention of the crowd easily for perfectly airy tracks.

Jessie Reyez and Savannah Re were a perfect duo for a night at The Crocodile. Both sassy and confident women killed their sets for a beautiful night of powerful music.
