They say if you love someone to set them free. And Seattle did just that when Ever So Android flew south to Los Angeles, leaving their longstanding local fans eager for more. Well, they’re back. This Saturday, band returns to our fair city, with a stacked show at The Crocodile, for the release of their fourth EP, Castles, and with the energy this band is known for, it’s one you won’t want to miss.
Since leaving Seattle, ESA has been making the rounds of LA venues, and taking it back to their roots, with refreshed inspiration and more than a little sunshine. But not to worry, those rays haven’t tarnished the duo’s glitchy, dark vibe. In fact, they’re sounding more like they rediscovered themselves, polishing the purest roots of their sound.
With a tight four tracks, Castles will make you sit upright. It’s all roaring basslines, glitchy beats, and the kind of stripped-down electro-rock that jolts you awake. On “Kings and Queens,” the fuzzy, electric opening gives way to Simpson singing “The water’s fine won’t you come on in” before ripping you a new one with her trademark yelp-and-growl combo. Meanwhile, Murray’s beats and throbbing guitar drive it home.
Setting a deeper groove is “Fading,” that sets a story of disappearance, one that feels almost like a haunted world. It doesn’t hit you over the head but it sure does sink into new territory for the band with a dark-pop vibe. The exploration of new ground is apparent throughout the EP, which includes “R&R,” the last track the duo worked on before heading south, and the closer “Tapes,” which shows off sassy vocals and a driving beat.
Get all the duo’s live chemistry this weekend as they hit the stage with a little help from Among Authors, Dirty Dirty, and Fruit Juice.
