Tower of Power
Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Seattle, WA

Tower of Power has been a cornerstone in the funk/soul music scene since their inception in 1968.  Hailing from Oakland, they have had a rotating cast of some of the best and brightest musicians and instrumentalists the funk world had to offer during their time. At the world-famous Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, we were treated to Tower Of Power version 17.4.

The 10-piece crew, led by the immeasurably charismatic Marcus Scott, filled the dining room with some white hot funky soul. Opening with “We Came To Play,” the crowd immediately responded to his effortless affability. Oh yeah, his voice is super soulful as well.

What gives a band staying power? Sometimes it is personality, other times it is one hit that lasts throughout existence. For Tower of Power, it is a combination with an emphasis on musicality. In short, these guys can absolutely slay on their instruments. Standout soloist goes to guitarist, Jerry Cortez. His solo on “To Say The Least, You’re The Most,” was, in William Miller’s words, “incendiary.” World class musicians playing timeless classics is always a formula for a wildly fun evening.

The highlight of the night was their performance of the classic ballad, “Willin’ To Learn.” The crescendo through the break is such an uplifting one, with a cool, slow burn. Throughout their revolving door of performers, Tower of Power has retained their power and influence in the musical landscape. It is certainly a musical structure with a strong foundation that will be a fixture for generations to come.
