Steel Panther w/ December in Red
Showbox SoDo, Seattle, WA
11.19.16
One of the most entertaining bands out now, Steel Panther brought their comic/glam rock “Well Hungover” tour to a sold out Showbox SoDo in Seattle. From their humble beginnings as an LA parody cover band of the glam-era legends, they’re now drawing national love for their own over-the-top original material.
Seattle’s own December In Red opened up the evening with a familiar sound that evoked elements of the Deftones and Tool. But it was clearly their own scorching brand of rock. Singer Del McGeachy brought a unique vocal style that expanded on the ferocity of the music driving the crowd wild.
Steel Panther have come a long way from their days on the Sunset Strip, and have now released three full-length albums of original music. But they’ve kept the hilarity and exaggerated stylings of the stereotypical 80’s “Glam Metal” vibe.
Bursting onto the stage in front of the giant Steel Panther backdrop, singer Michael Starr, bassist Lexxi Foxx, guitarist Satchel and drum Stix Zadinia are a force to be seen. Spandex and hairspray, bandanas, and locks flying everywhere, they opened with “Eyes Of A Panther.”
Their onstage antics and irreverent, politically incorrect banter had the entire venue in stiches. No one was safe as the band member rippe on each other and the entire crowd throughout their set. For example, Satchel announced they are making a documentary about Foxx coming out 2018 called “50 Shades of Gay.”
Inhibitions went out the window. A girl named Natalie was brought on stage at one point, and Starr declared “Hope you like Grey Poupon on your face.” They asked her to take off her top, which was easily obliged. But Natalie came prepared and the band was disappointed that she had tasseled nipple covers on. They made such a scene out of it, turning to the audience to ask, “who wants to see her boobies?” and everyone went insane. Off came the nipple covers and each band member took turns serenading her. Natalie, fully topless, got versions of “She’s On The Rag” and “Girl From Oklahoma.”
During “17 Girls In a Row” it seemed like 30 girls were brought up on stage to dance behind the guys. The laughter abounded with “Gloryhole” and the sheer hilarity of the lyrical content song after song.
If you love the 80’s hair metal era, laughing your ass off, and having a great time, then a Steel Panther show is exactly what you need. With the release of a new studio album in 2017 called Lower The Bar, it seems that there will be many more opportunities to enjoy a new tour soon.
