Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas w/ Chord Overstreet
KeyArena, Seattle, WA
08.21.16

In honor of their ten-year friendship, two of pop music’s most radio-ready stars – and both products of The Disney Channel and Hollywood Records – Nick Jonas and Demi teamed up for the annual Honda Civic Tour, dubbed the “Future Now” tour, for a 45-show North American run. Jonas, after touring with his siblings as the Jonas Brothers, is now on his third solo studio album, Last Year Was Complicated, while Lovato is touring music from her fifth studio album, Confident.

On August 21st, Seattle’s KeyArena was bustling with energy from a very excited crowd. The dark, foggy arena had an aura of mystery about it, and at 8:30 PM the whole arena went pitch black. A large clock appeared on the backdrop screen and began to count down from 20. Fans started counting down, amping up the entire mood. At zero, Jonas entered the stage wearing a jean jacket and black pants, opening the show with “Levels.”

Jonas brought us on the journey of how Last Year Was Complicated, the end of a public breakup having heavily influenced this album. He opened the show in an explosion of white light, asking everyone to dance and party with him.  After rocking out on stage with his backup singers and guitar players, Jonas asks for his guitar so he can do something special for this crowd. We were all in for a treat as Jonas began to play the opening chords to “S.O.S.,” one of the fan favorites from the Jonas Brothers’ self-titled album. As the chords began to play everyone went wild. But he only sang one chorus before transitioning into “Who I Am” from his second solo album.

He then slowed the show down with a spotlight, his guitar, and the lights from hundreds of cellphones waving in the air. After Jonas proclaimed his love for Seattle, he picked the show up again with “Bacon.” Red and yellow lights flooded the stage, as he removed his jacket and the whole arena began sizzling. Then instantly the lights shifted to all white, stark imagery displayed on the backdrop, and Jonas serenaded everyone with “Numb.” Cut to “Chains,” and the arena went wild. Once he finished telling everyone about how his love is in chains, a curtain fell and he left the stage.

Lights up on Demi Lovato. She is on a raised platform, exuding confidence in a black leather leotard and thigh-high boots.  Bright blue, pink, purple, and orange psychedelic lights flashed behind her as she owned the stage with “Confident.”

Lovato called out to Seattle, thanking the city for the show and their love. She sang through her set list with powerful vocals, incredible runs, and a commanding presence. While being on tour, Lovato announced that she has new music, the whole stage turns red and she sings “Body Say.” Later, she invited Bea Miller to the stage, commenting that she is so proud of Miller and all of her hard work. Together, they slay Miller’s track, “Yes Girl,” and Miller thanks Seattle for being here. “Lionheart” brought a new level of heat to the show with crazy lion animations blown up on the big screen, and as the song came to a close, a white grand piano rose from the stage. Jonas appears, and he and Lovato playfully joke “funny to see you here” and break into Lovato’s “Stone Cold.” Jonas played the piano and harmonized on vocals. As the song came to a close, Jonas took over the stage and Lovato and the piano disappear.

Jonas then broke into “Chainsaw” and “Jealous,” his falsetto matched only by the screams of the crowd, before Lovato returned to the stage wearing a white leotard, for Jonas’ song, “Close.” They ruled the stage with their strong vocals, alas; this was Nick’s final song for the night.

Demi shifted the mood with her powerful ballad “Skyscraper,” from her third album. She shared her story of rising from the dust and being stronger than ever, the arena glowing with lights from the crowd in support. She then kicked it back up to a party with “Give Your Heart a Break,” and rounded out the night by heating up with “Cool For the Summer,” owning the stage with her dance moves and fire.

Clearly no longer Disney tweens, both performers have come into their own and shown everyone exactly what that means. Their confidence, sexiness, and power were uncontrollable on the stage. This show, jam-packed with gorgeous falsetto and powerful vocals did not disappoint.
