Rob Zombie & KORN w/ In This Moment
White River Amphitheatre, Seattle, WA
07.27.16

If anyone tells you that rock is dead, they are sorely mistaken, proven by the massive turnout for Rob Zombie and KORN, who came together to co-headline the “Return Of The Dreads” tour at the White River Amphitheatre.

Opening the three-ring circus was Los Angeles, California’s In This Moment.  They brought a very theatrical show from start to finish, with the entire band dressed in various masks and graphic body paint. Front woman Maria Brink, with an impressive number of costume changes, was also complemented by her “Blood Girls” at center stage. They were a very visual spectacle, with empowering music, and lyrics that ITM fans have come to know and love.

KORN has been the Bakersfield, CA act that put that city and the nu-metal sound on the map since 1993. This band near-single-handedly defined a sound and genre, and while others have fallen away, KORN still remains on top. Their performance was heavy, with dreads flying everywhere, and you can tell the band are still having a great time playing together after almost 24 years on stage.   One of the greatest moments was when front man Jonathan Davis asked the crowd to, “Raise your middle fingers in the air and say Fuck That.”  The jam-packed fan base happily complied and they launched into “Y’all Wanna Single.”

Still totally on point, KORN let the music do the talking. The stage was comprised of several moving LED lights and a giant LED screen, creating such a cool light show. All integrated into the video display, it sure makes for a fun visual onslaught to match the music. Always a fun live band to see live, it is clear that Korn are “Here To Stay.”

As diverse as his career as a musician, director, and film producer, Rob Zombie’s stage reflected an elaborate amount of variety. The horror, zombie caricatures, giant boom box, video screens on risers, and the backdrop provided almost too much to keep an eye on.

Opening the night with “Dead City Radio,” it was immediately apparent that this was going to be a non-stop party. Rob Zombie knows how to put on a show. His band is as theatrical in appearance and performance as their leader, their constant movement and the accompanying video is pretty insane. They have a giant devil that comes out during song “Superbeast” and later a giant robot from the White Zombie days.

Playing a mix of his solo and White Zombie classics, the night quickly went by.  Zombie even came out into the audience at one point, walking through the majority of the amphitheatre while guitarist John 5 played his solo.

The last two major tracks, “American Band” and “Dragula,” brought the festivities to an end. What a great night it was, from three different, but incredible bands, each showing that rock and roll is alive and well.
