There is gospel and there is punk, there is blues and there is soul, but most of all, there is intention from Southern rockers Seratones during a hot, muggy show at Barboza in Seattle. Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, the four-piece band played in support of the release of their debut album Get Gone from Fat Possum Records. Having garnered some pretty serious enthusiasm, though the crowd was small, they wanted to be there, and they danced the night away to prove it.
Vocalist AJ Haynesâ beautiful, sultry voice carried across the room, her huge vocal range nailing massive highs and the lowest lows, showing off a kind of soul that doesnât come along every day. She whipped the crowd into a dance frenzy with just a kick beat, some clapping, and her powerful voice.
Many of their songs seem to pull directly from relationships, fleshed out with psychedelic riffs and tight arrangements, the bandâs swagger on stage throughout proof of their winning formula. Haynes would come out from the stage and dance on the speakers, mic in one hand, tambourine in the other. On top of their howlingly-good set, they closed the night with back-to-back covers of of David Bowieâs âSuffragette Cityâ and MC5âs âKick Out the Jams.â
And though the crowd continued to beg for more, and the band appeared ready to play, security ended up shutting it down at closing, always a sign of a successful night.
