Daughter

The dim threshold of The Showbox opened to discover one of the most intimately delivered shows from Daughter. The London-based indie-folk trio is here in support of their January 2016 sophomore release Not to Disappear, and their unflinchingly moody performance won’t soon be forgotten.
Pale white lights highlighted the sparse stage as vocalist/guitarist Elena Tonra’s soft expressions and deep, melodic lyrics fell from her lips. Tracks from the new album as well as their 2013 release If You Leave were executed with precision, rippling through the sold-out show. The venue reveled in the band’s mysterious, detached soundscapes.
Founded in 2010, this young band stirs emotions with brutally honest shoegaze, prompting both heartache and courage. Tracks like “Youth,” “How,” “Numbers,” and “Not to Disappear” rooted the crowd’s energy in the present. Tonra’s emotive power was well supported by bandmates Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella, creating a balanced vibe between punctuated percussion and swirling guitars.
Breaks between songs invited commentary from the eclectic crowd shouting, “We Love You,” as the band graciously accepted and reciprocated the adoration.
The band is selling out shows left and right, but if you’re lucky, you’ll find tickets near you.
