Stop your search for the perfect winter warmer, if this local lineup doesn’t soothe your rain-soaked Seattle heart, I don’t know what will. With Smokey Bright’s oh-so-inviting yet unsettling brand of moody pop, Cataldo’s horn-tinged, hook-laden arrangements, and the beautifully-crafted, harmony filled folk songs of Planes on Paper, you’re sure to get cozy with a full house of enthusiastic fans.
Planes on Paper, the Yakima-based duo of Navid Eliot and Jen Borst, released their second EP The Ruins last January. Another batch of straightforward folk songs, the record is just another small taste of what this twosome might be capable of. Their twisting, emotive harmonies pull you into their world of Americana-laced honesty, and live, having recently morphed to include a full band, PoP will be an introspective community affair.
Follow that with the warm indie-pop of Cataldo and your night is off and running. The Seattle band – and brainchild of the musically prolific Eric Anderson – has been popping up all over the place this year, and we’re not complaining about it. Cataldo’s fourth album Gilded Oldies is seductively accessible and full of clever lyrical musings on adulthood. In person, Anderson’s dry wit is the cherry on top of the band’s well-crafted sound.
Headlining the night will be Seattle five-piece Smokey Brights with their wry, moody pop. Their 2014 full-length Taste For Blood showcases intelligent lyrics and a familiar, vintage-y pop sound, having grown more anthemic over the course of their four years together. Their live shows – including slots at Timber!, Capitol Hill Block Party, and Bumbershoot festivals – are a joy to both watch and hear.
