First Aid Arts Benefit featuring Joseph
The Triple Door, Seattle, WA
11.30.15
Joseph is the name of a town in eastern Oregon; To a trio of sisters from Portland, it is also the name of their grandfather and a candid, philosophical approach to life. Recently, Joseph has signed with ATO Records and are quickly becoming a gentle force to be reckoned with, growing into a mainstay at Pacific Northwest clubs and theaters. On Monday at the Triple Door, they played in support of First Aid Arts, a local non-profit that provides training and arts-based rehabilitation to trauma victims.
One lonely instrument, an acoustic guitar that Meegan plays, sways one into thinking it will be a night of three-part harmonies fluttering from the stage and into ears with tender whimsy. Indeed, that does happen, along with powerful vocals that fill the room at a moment’s notice. Joseph’s simplicity is their draw. Seeing them for the first time at a Seattle Living Room show, they have moments of genuine connection with the audience and with each other on stage.
Highlighting the night was Andrew Stonestreet’s “Eyes to the Sky,” a simple song with a simple message of fighting through the fray to find hope, even in times of pain and suffering. I will lift up my eyes to the sky, to the sky. Given the themes of the night and what First Aid Arts wants to achieve, it was a genuinely befitting song.
PNW through and through, Joseph is on the rise. That said, they’re probably coming to a town near you soon enough. Catch their show, and thank me later.
