The Neighbourhood w/ Bad Suns, Hunny
Showbox SoDo, Seattle, WA
10.21.15
It’s not all black and white. Except when it is. And a live show from SoCal rock band The Neighbourhood is perfectly curated to give you exactly what they want you to see. The all-black stage is lit in all-white strobes, flashing neon palm trees adorning the backdrop. The NBHD has only been releasing music for a few short years, but their fans are already clearly adoring. The young crowd decked themselves out in band merch and held their ground on the floor in front of the stage from the get-go.
Lead vocalist Jesse Rutherford, in high water pants and a plain white tee grooved his way through a set list split between their 2013 release I Love You and their soon-to-be released sophomore LP Wiped Out! Their music is intriguing in its mix of indie-pop and hip-hop, maybe a little reggae flair along the way, definitely sing-along worthy. The crowd didn’t hesitate to just sing the entire way through, hands in the air, a handful of enthusiastic dancers in the back. Their moody set was on point, and the tracks from their upcoming album are only serving to solidify their fan base.
Opening for The Neighbourhood were two other southern California acts, Bad Suns and Hunny. Bad Suns was almost impossible to see and it sounded a bit fuzzy, but clearly most of the crowd didn’t mind. They were singing along, there was a lot of screaming. Was it their best live show? Probably not. But hey, they’re catchy.
On the other hand, Hunny was a surprise bonus for the night. The sextet has some great hooks, making jangly, danceable indie rock that feels very now. Their debut EP Pain / Ache / Loving is out now and worth some rotation.
