Psychedelic Furs w/ the Other Band
The Showbox, Seattle, WA
09.03.15
The youthfully middle-aged woman behind me in line for Psychedelic Furs had her purse stuffed with all of her old albums, like a teeny-bopper who might faint at the sight of her favorite band. The bar tables inside The Showbox were sprinkled with candles, the margarita salt and various cocktail accoutrements at the ready. The 21-and-over crowd was closer to 35-and-over if I’m being generous. But the timeless quality of the PFurs catalog held strong, well into their third decade as a band, Richard Butler proving the staying power of a rock star that knows how to enjoy himself.
Butler’s still got a growl that might even be sexier now, hamming it up on stage with animated moves as the PFurs worked their way through the hits in glorious fashion, the sound and lighting on point, the crowd overjoyed to be singing along the whole way through. No worse for the wear, the band still has great energy and their musicianship certainly commands respect.
Starting the show off was The Church, another rock and roll veteran band, with their classic psych-rock vibes. It was a well matched lineup for the grown-up crowd, proving that mildly-hit records from 30 years ago still hold their shimmering brilliance and the power to mesmerize crowds both old and new.
