Purity RingĀ w/ Braids and Born Gold
Showbox SoDo, Seattle, WA
06.17.15
A wonder of light and sound, Purity Ring manufactured a hypnotic electronic dream for their Showbox SODO show. The dark stage, with a backdrop of beaded cord lights hanging from the ceiling, along with beat-maker Corin Roddick’s custom made drum and light machine created a dreamscape that pulsed with the beats, bringing each song to life in a new visceral way. Verging more on EDM than their more atmospheric debut, the Edmonton, CA based duo’s sophomore release Another Eternity gave them plenty of material to turn the cavernous venue into a massive dance party.
Sporting a custom-made space-alien-like two-piece white cat suit, singer Megan James gave a standout performance. Sticking mostly to the edge of the stage she sang directly to the sold out crowd, occasionally interacting with the sweaty, excited bunch. There were moments when she’d wander through the pendant lights, blending into a silhouette in the smoky environment. While the band may come off as otherworldly and untouchable, James proved the opposite with a massive crowd-surf during the last song – singing straight through – letting the fans carry her throughout the venue.
With their stylized aesthetic and mix of dance pop and danger, Purity Ring is definitely putting on a badass show, giving the crowd all they’ve got. Later in the night, they also made a pitstop at Q Nightclub for a DJ set, which they occasionally work into the larger tour schedule.
Hopping across continents for the rest of the summer, find a show here.
