Alex Winston w/ Neon Trees and Yes You Are
Showbox, Seattle, WA

The quirk is paying off in spades for Detroit bred, NYC based alt pop singer Alex Winston. Opening up for Neon Trees last weekend at a spectacular show at the storied Showbox, Winston gave us every reason to listen. While comparisons to the indomitable Kate Bush fly across the web, Winston has her own innate pop sensibility that subtly dips radio-ready tunes into a strange brew, laying them down with frenetic energy on stage.
Winston’s voice is clear, trained in classical opera and a capable multi-instrumentalist, even with a full band her clever vocals are at the forefront of the set. Picking up a guitar, careening around the stage mic in hand, Winston is a consummate performer, putting on an energetic, passionate show. The girl’s got grit, sass, and catchy tunes in spades. While her 2012 full-length King Con may not have struck the industry over the head, the work she’s put in since seem to be heading her in the right direction. Now releasing on her own imprint Rat Rizzo Records, Winston seems to have come to terms with where she’s at, making clearly intelligent and meaningful new pop magic.
Check out the 2014 hit “Careless” which packs a powerful punch, and her new 2015 EP The Day I Died, now out on SoundCloud, wherein she delivers a pop anthem, a slow jam and the 80’s-tinged, totally danceable “Dead End.”
