Snoop’s 2nd Annual Wellness Retreat
w/ G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, E-40
WaMu Theatre, Seattle, WA
04.19.15
Snoop Dogg and company invited Seattle to “inhale, exhale and recharge” at his second annual wellness retreat that landed on 4/19, in a state that both celebrates and protects legal, recreational marijuana.
The timeframe of the cast of artists was wide, with E-40 – who made his EP debut 25 years ago, Snoop’s – whose came 23 back, and both G-Eazy and TY$ in the last 5. This show contained a mix of both the new artistic blood and the legendary. E-40’s underground work and Snoop’s more main stream success have shaped the genre into what it is today and have recently borne G-Eazy and Ty$.
E-40 showed the crowd what made him the legend that he is, with sharp, tight lyrics and heavy beats pounding into the opening act. Ty$ was energetic and explosive in his own right.
G-Eazy’s performance was fascinating: his stage presence embodies a character that is some combination of a film noir’d leather clad James Dean and a young rapper from the bay area cutting his teeth with Snoop. He was backlit at some moments, casting Sin City style silhouettes, and in other moments his music video for “Been On” played behind him, featuring his smoking of a cigarette in slow motion and in contrast-heavy black and white. The female contingent of the audience
appreciated what he was throwing down on stage, as evidenced by the multitude of bras flung at him that he deftly dodged to continue performing “I Mean It,” “Tumblr girls,” and “Lady Killers,” among others.
Snoop closed out the night smoking some of our finest legal Washington marijuana in one of the largest blunts I’ve ever seen. His flow blended together in his signature style that could only be described as the pinnacle of laid back. Snoop kept the crowd going until early in the morning (though not quite 6).
