Caribou
The Showbox, Seattle, WA
03.04.15
Slowly but surely, the Market Showbox eased into max capacity on Wednesday night, as Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, blessed Seattle with his magnetic, Canadian presence. After trying on a few pseudonyms, Caribou seems to have stuck for the moment. Under any name, however, this composer and mathematician has surely pumped out the jams, to the tune of seven full-length albums and a heaping pile of EP’s since 2001. Snaith released Our Love back in October, winning IMPALA’s Album of the Year award, and is now giddily taking his show on the road.
Bodies seemed to slowly filter in, but as lights began to pour over the crowd, one could tell that this was a sold-out show. The lighting was phenomenal, kissing faces like a light Seattle rain. Settling in, bodies slowly got in the groove, some nodding their heads, others already perspiring. Snaith possessed an innate ability to guide his band on stage, and with a drummer, bassist, and guitarist behind him, it felt as though his music was jacked on steroids. The energy was palpable. They dropped “Our Love” mid-show, followed by “Can’t Do Without You.” The crowd went crazy, hearing this new material for the first time in a live setting. As bassist John Schmersal took over a haunting role on vocals, Snaith took a seat on the drum throne and let loose. Immediately, his stage presence grew ten-fold. Every rap on the drum increased his intensity. When the show wound down and the lights went up, it was clear that the audience wasn’t ready to go home. The encore was probably one of the loudest on record. If you’ve been in the market for some new electronic waves and are surprisingly unfamiliar with Caribou, your time has come! Tickets are still available depending on your geographic location, so you better make haste.
