The Hood Internet

There may be no better way to spend a rainy Saturday night in Seattle than with the expertly inventive mashups of Chicago DJs, The Hood Internet. The production duo of Aaron Brink (ABX) and Steve Reidell (STV SLV) has – for the last 7 years – created some of the most original and intriguing mixtapes and singles, forged from bones of hip hop and indie rock but jumping genres across the board.
Saturday’s was a one-man show with Reidell manning the stage on his own, for a tightly packed crowd of Fremont’s best. From dude bros to hippies, and everything in between, it felt like a solid set, with everyone in a chill but grooving mood. Reidell threw out examples of what have become The Hood Internet’s classics: Destiny’s Child, Ludacris, and R. Kelly, each mashed with some crazy, out-of-nowhere combo. Try Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” woven with the experimental rock of Ratatat on for size. It fits well.
At some point, there was apparently a strong request for Hall & Oates, so Reidell broke out “Private Eyes,” with little alteration, which seemed to please. The Hood Internet walks down 80’s and 90’s memory lane with sheer genius, reinventing the songs that everyone has come to call their own, in ways you wouldn’t expect. Having seen before what these guys can do, I don’t doubt for a second their ability to truly ignite a party, and make it a point to get to their live sets whenever possible.
So, when you feel like dancing and need something new that’s guaranteed to make you smile, go check out their almost-overwhelming catalogue, or keep an eye out for a show near you.
