Skinny Puppy

Some of the best musical nightmares came true on Monday night as Skinny Puppy paid a visit to SoDo, lending a hazy carnival atmosphere to the crisp, wintry air. Boasting 15 albums over a span of 30 years, Skinny Puppy hardly requires much in the way of an introduction. They are pioneers and living legends of their electro-industrial genre, continually doling out their unique brand of infectious candy for the masses to feed upon. Run away children. Nay, shield your eyes…
A few minutes past ten and singer Nivek Ogre snatched the big kids from their daydreams. I’ll let the pictures below do most of the talking, but a warped amalgamation of a hunchbacked, vampire-like, radioactive Skeletor suddenly dominated the stage. Frightening and theatrical, the stage antics were supported by a backdrop of live-feed video, and the energy on the floor only grew. Ogre wore a camera as well. And, much like a second act, he changed into a morphological dog that may or may not have raided your grandma’s ratty tatty fur coat rack from the 40’s. Don’t get me wrong – it was still more creepy than funny. One got the sense that their skin or their skull could be Ogre’s next outfit. (Always the pessimist!) The third costume change saw Ogre as the skinniest puppy, with tattered ears and skin seemingly shred about his face. The long rubber gloves? Why not, what the hell. The token chick in the biohazard suit was repeatedly trying to stick him with a syringe. My advice would be to stay away from that dogfight altogether.
Oh, and by the way, they sounded amazing. Canadians only get better with time.
