A decade in, Death from Above 1979 is fresh off the release of their long-awaited second album, The Physical World. The Canadian duo, consisting of Sebastien Grainger and Jesse Keeler, took a five year hiatus from 2006 to 2011, returning to a fan base that has been just as forgiving as it has been receptive. Their latest single, “Trainwreck 1979,” has found plenty of love on Seattle radio; meanwhile, these two have been earnestly pounding the pavement, and are currently headed for more Canadian and European dates.
Crudely lit between two harsh white lights, Keeler stood in all black as drummer Grainger sat his opposite in white. Put together on stage, their resulting mix was anything but gray. Years of inactivity aside, DfA’s chemistry became even more evident as their set progressed, smoothly working together and making the most of their stage time. Keeler head-banged about, still playing his bass as he fell to the floor. Staring at a backdrop of their iconic elephant image pulsing in different colors, the crowd was going wild in a never-ending attempt to reach the front. Arms and legs flew around as surfers took to the air. Grainger highlighted his vocal duties this evening with an ode to fellow Toronto band Crystal Castles.
