FKA twigs
The Showbox, Seattle, WA

Electronic trip hop artist twigs made her presence known on an unsuspecting Tuesday night at the Showbox, selling out the house with a performance that edged on a risqué dance recital. Hailing from England, twigs had already garnered quite a resume as a backup dancer before trading in for a mic. Now, at 26, she runs the show to her own brand of experimental, alternative R&B, with moves that threaten to steal her own show.
Eerie slow sounds, blue lights, and fog were followed by Lucki Ecks’ “Ouch Ouch” a few minutes before 10:00, signaling the beginning of the show as the stage remained dark as night. To backlit white lights, twigs graced the stage and sounded beautifully hypnotizing. Her dainty arms floated to and fro, in an atmosphere that felt more dreamlike amid the sound of drums in the blackness. Working up a sweat, twigs ditched her furry, collared overdress to reveal a tight, sheer black leotard skirt combo, cranking up the heat one more notch. Taking pause, she told the crowd, “I just wanted to say thank you so much for coming here tonight, because I haven’t been here before, so it’s so amazing to come. I sound so British. It’s so amazing to be able to fill a venue like this, thank you so much for the support!” Dare I say timid, she was soft-spoken as the fog rolled away and was replaced with strobes and red lights. She took the time to introduce her three touring band members before dancing away the remainder of her set. Twigs capped off the evening with this to say to the Seattle crowd: “Last night I was in Vancouver, and I told them that they were the best audience… and I lied to them, because you guys are the best audience.”
