The countdown has begun, and Anberlin has a paltry 44 days remaining in existence. That’s right, you heard me correctly: Anberlin is on The Final Tour. Twelve years and seven albums will soon be put to rest in the history books. Sigh. I wish I had better news for you. As if it’s any consolation, let me offer you a recap of their show Monday night at the Showbox.
Anberlin came on at the stroke of 9:30 to a haunting echo that reverberated inside the Box, before steamrolling into their set list with “Never Take Friendship Personal.” Sold out, and with real estate at a premium, the crowd rumbled and shouted along, energetic yet polite. Singer Stephen Christian ran about on stage while drummer Nathan Young tore it up. Such was the pace, that, without blinking, Anberlin flowed right into their next song. Eventually taking a break, Christian explains that he wrote “The Unwinding Cable Car” while walking around Pike Place: “Thank you very much. I can’t believe how many memories are in Seattle!” Their guitarist even gave a shout out to the Hawks, stating that his family is from here and that he looks forward to seeing the crowd about town. Maybe Seattle has gained a musician. I suppose there’s always a silver lining… Check out their set list – it was epic, and try to catch them one last time if you can.
