La Roux

Jolting attendees out of a long workweek, metaphorical defibrillator La Roux brought Showbox at the Market to its feet Friday night with a packed crowd ready to sweat it out. La Roux, once a duo, now consists solely of member Elly Jackson after the subtraction of producer Ben Langmaid. A long and bumbling road has finally seen La Roux release a sophomore album, Trouble In Paradise, in July of this year. While listeners waited with a critical ear, one would be hard pressed to say her work has suffered when all was said and done. This music still packs a punch, and so does her performance.
Backed by a four person touring band, Elly Jackson focused less on chatter and more on her music. And dancing. So much dancing. The stage was generally low lit, with strobes aplenty during most choruses. A giant boom box was plastered on the back wall. Jackson wore a bright yellow blazer and skinny black jeans, shimmying from one side of the stage and back as blue and red lights saturated the air around her. Her defiantly red hair stayed combed back, as she touched hands and shared a mic with front row faces. Jackson’s voice carried well in a live setting, taking out the higher end and adding more ‘bulk.’ As the 14 song set list bore down to the last, people from the bar and surrounding walls converged on the floor for “Bulletproof,” taking their last opportunity to cut a rug. La Roux finishes her US stint in New York at the beginning of October before returning to Europe for a clutch of winter dates.
