Thursday night the electropop fans of Portland gathered at the Crystal Ballroom for Passion Pits second performance in two days at Musicfest Northwest. Passion Pit, touring of their most recent album Gossamer, started their night off with the opening track to the new record “Take a Walk”. An awesome drum beat which makes you want to jump and bang your feet to the grown at the same got the portland fans of the Crystal Ballroom going. Walking to the beat of the song lead singer Michael Angelakos paced the front of the stage banging his mic in the air. The awesome keyboard over top the drums was just the reason Passion Pit have been a hit ever since their formation Berklee College of Music, brilliant stuff. Having played the night before it took lead Angelakos only 4 songs after playing Let Your Love Grow to say “WOW, I think you guys might be a better crowd then last night”. Passion Pit then started into Carried Away and the crowd erupted into huge screams. The crowd went crazy on this song, singing back to the band and with intense jumping. With the crazy spring-like flooring if you were not jumping on your own you were jumping from the movement of the floor around you. Immediately after the song he made it clear that they were the a better crowd then the night before. The rest of the night went off great only getting better. Playing a mixture of songs off the new album, Mirrored Sea, Constant Conversations, and I’ll Be Alright with a bunch of older songs The Reeling, Little Secrets, Sleepyhead, and Let You Love Grown Tall. With band like Passion Pit if they had played 5 days in Portland they would have filled the Crystal Ballroom each night, no problem. Check out photos from their second night at the Crystal Ballroom including a few photos of opening act Fort Lean.
Admitting shamefully, when I went to the Passion Pit concert I thought that they were still tour on their debut album. I quickly found out that they had actually just released a new album since their first album. What a fool I was not to know about this new record, but it made the night even better. I got to hear a lot of their new music for the first time, live. Which for me listening to music has always been a lot better when its at a live performance. And for me after seeing them preform their new album live I was able to go home and listen to the new CD to relive the entire night for the first time, twice. If that makes sense.
